Walter Kohn was a renowned Austrian-American theoretical physicist and theoretical chemist. Born in 1923, he made significant contributions to the field of physics, particularly in the understanding of electronic properties of materials. Although often associated with astronomy, his work primarily focused on the theoretical aspects of physics and chemistry. Kohn's pioneering efforts led to the development of groundbreaking theories that transformed the understanding of complex systems.
Kohn's most notable achievement was the development of density functional theory, a computational method that enabled the calculation of quantum mechanical electronic structure using equations involving electronic density. This innovation led to more accurate calculations and new insights in materials science, condensed-phase physics, and chemical physics. In recognition of his contributions, Kohn was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1998, alongside John Pople. He passed away in 2016, leaving behind a legacy of profound impact on the scientific community.
