Samson Wertheimer was a prominent figure in Austrian Jewish society, serving as the chief rabbi of Hungary and Moravia, as well as the rabbi of Eisenstadt. His influence extended beyond the realm of spirituality, as he was also a skilled financier who played a significant role in the Austrian Empire's economic affairs. Wertheimer's financial acumen and connections earned him a position as a court Jew, allowing him to wield considerable influence in the imperial court.
As a shtadlan, or intermediary, to Austrian Emperor Leopold I, Wertheimer utilized his financial expertise to support the Empire's military endeavors. Notably, he collaborated with fellow financier Samuel Oppenheimer to secure funding for the Spanish War of Succession on behalf of the Austrian Empire. Through his work, Wertheimer demonstrated his ability to navigate both the spiritual and financial spheres, leaving a lasting impact on the Jewish community and the Austrian Empire during his lifetime.
