Otto Rank
osztrák pszichoanalitikus, író, tanár és terapeuta
Otto Rank was a prominent Austrian psychoanalyst, writer, and philosopher, born in Vienna in 1884. He formed a close professional relationship with Sigmund Freud, becoming one of his key collaborators and serving as secretary of the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society. Rank also played a significant role in editing leading psychoanalytic journals and published various studies on myth and creativity, making notable contributions to the field of psychology.
Rank's work took a significant turn with the publication of his book, The Trauma of Birth, in 1924, which introduced the concept of the "pre-Oedipal" and proposed an alternative to Freud's developmental theory. This led to a break with Freud, after which Rank established psychotherapy practices in Paris and New York. His approach emphasized the importance of authenticity, empathy, and unconditional respect in the therapeutic relationship, influencing the development of existential, interpersonal, and humanistic therapy, as well as social work and action learning. Rank's ideas continue to have a lasting impact on psychological and cultural criticism, with his concepts on creativity and the double remaining relevant to this day, until his death in 1939.
