Luigi Chiarini (abbot)

Italian abbot, orientalist and translator

Luigi Chiarini was a prominent Italian abbot, orientalist, and translator, specializing in the field of Judaism. Born on April 26, 1789, near Montepulciano, Italy, Chiarini would go on to make significant contributions to the understanding of Jewish texts. His work as an orientalist and translator paved the way for a deeper appreciation of Jewish culture and literature, particularly in Europe.

Chiarini's most notable achievement was the first translation of the Talmud into French, a monumental task that showcased his linguistic and scholarly expertise. This endeavor was supported by a grant from Tsar Nicholas I, recognizing the importance and potential impact of Chiarini's work. Unfortunately, Chiarini's life was cut short when he passed away on February 28, 1832, in Warsaw, Poland. Despite his untimely death, his translation of the Talmud remains a testament to his dedication and scholarship, continuing to be a valuable resource for those studying Judaism.
