Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn
Sixth Chabad Rebbe (1880–1950)
Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn was a prominent Orthodox rabbi who served as the sixth Rebbe of the Chabad Lubavitch Hasidic movement. Born in 1880, he played a crucial role in preserving Orthodox Judaism, particularly during a period of significant challenge. Schneersohn is also referred to by several other names, including the Frierdiker Rebbe, the Rebbe RaYYaTz, and the Rebbe Rayatz, reflecting his esteemed position within the Hasidic community.
Throughout his life, Schneersohn dedicated himself to the preservation of Orthodox Judaism, often under difficult circumstances. His efforts initially focused on maintaining the practice of Orthodox Judaism within the Soviet Union, where he faced considerable opposition. Eventually, he was compelled to leave the Soviet Union and continued his work from Latvia and later Poland. Ultimately, Schneersohn relocated to the United States, where he spent the final decade of his life, from 1940 until his passing in 1950, remaining committed to his mission of promoting and protecting Orthodox Judaism.
