Regina Resnik
American opera singer (1922–2013)
Regina Resnik was a renowned American opera singer with a career that traversed the globe, enduring for five decades. Born in 1922, she embarked on her professional journey in 1942 as a soprano, swiftly establishing a lasting connection with the prestigious Metropolitan Opera. This association, which commenced in 1944, would continue for nearly four decades, until 1983. During her early years, Resnik's vocal prowess and artistic dedication earned her recognition, laying the groundwork for a distinguished career in the world of opera.
A pivotal moment in Resnik's career came in 1953 when, under the guidance of conductor Clemens Krauss, she undertook the process of retraining her voice to specialize in the mezzo-soprano repertoire. This transition, which was completed by 1956, marked a significant shift in her performance focus, as she entirely phased out soprano literature from her repertoire. This strategic adjustment not only showcased her versatility but also highlighted her commitment to vocal excellence, further solidifying her position as a respected figure in the opera community until her passing in 2013.
