Moses ben Mordecai Zacuto
Dutch rabbi, Kabbalist, and poet
Moses ben Mordecai Zacuto was a prominent figure in the Jewish community, serving as a rabbi, Kabbalist, and poet. Born in Amsterdam to a family of Portuguese Marranos, he pursued an education in Jewish studies under the guidance of Saul Levi Morteira. In addition to his religious training, Zacuto also acquired knowledge of secular subjects, including the Latin language. This diverse educational background would later inform his work as a spiritual leader and writer.
As a young man in Amsterdam, Zacuto may have crossed paths with notable thinkers of his time, potentially including Baruch Spinoza, who was also a student of Morteira. Through his studies and writings, Zacuto earned recognition in the Jewish community, eventually becoming known by the Hebrew acronym RaMa"Z. His work as a rabbi, Kabbalist, and poet reflects his deep understanding of Jewish traditions and his ability to express complex ideas through various forms of writing.
