Abraham Azulai
Kabbalistic author and commentator (1570–1643)
Abraham Azulai was a prominent figure in the realm of Jewish mysticism, renowned for his contributions as a Kabbalistic author and commentator. Born in 1570 in Fez, Morocco, he spent the early part of his life immersed in the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of his native city. His formative years laid the groundwork for his future scholarly pursuits, which would come to be characterized by a deep understanding of Kabbalistic teachings.
In 1599, Azulai made a significant move to Ottoman Palestine, where he eventually settled in the historic city of Hebron. This relocation marked a new chapter in his life, during which he continued to develop his expertise in Kabbalistic thought. Over the course of his lifetime, which spanned until 1643, Azulai established himself as a respected voice in the Jewish mystical tradition, leaving behind a legacy of insightful commentaries and writings that would go on to influence generations of scholars and spiritual seekers.
